Choosing the Right Zero-Turn Mower
Boat Spring Commissioning Guide
Zero-turn mowers are without a doubt the most advanced mowing machines on the market, but not all zero-turns are created equal. The large variety of makes and models can be confusing at first, and when you are spending big money on a lawn mower, you should feel confident in your purchase. Whether you are a homeowner with a large property to maintain, or a turf care professional serving commercial or residential clients, the following guide can help you determine which model of zero-turn mower is right for you.
When you’re ready to shop for lawn mowers in person, head over to Yerxa’s Power Equipment. You can find a great selection of zero-turn models at our dealership in Portland, ME.
Cutting Deck
Deck size is going to be a big factor in your decision, and the size and shape of your property are going to dictate your choice of deck size. Your mower’s cutting deck should be large enough to maximize efficiency, but small enough to easily maneuver in the space available. To determine the appropriate deck size, you can refer to these general guidelines:
- Plots up to one acre: 42” cutting deck.
- Plots up to two acres: 42” to 46” cutting deck.
- Plots up to three acres: 46” to 50” cutting deck.
- Large commercial jobs: 50” and above.
Keep in mind that you might need a smaller cutting deck if your property contains any narrow spaces or obstacles that require careful maneuvering.
Steering Options
You can choose between four different options for steering your zero-turn mower, and this mostly comes down to personal preference. The most popular choice is the lap bar. This system relies on two levers, positioned at the lap level, that control the wheels independently. The lap bar allows you to take full advantage of your mower’s turning radius.
If you prefer a more familiar operating experience, you can choose a steering wheel instead. You might otherwise prefer a joystick, or stand-up controls that allow you to operate your zero-turn mower in a standing position. Stand-up controls can be particularly beneficial to commercial operators who experience fatigue from sitting for long periods.
Stay Vigilant – and Stay Visible
You will have a wide range of engine sizes to choose from, and your choice will depend on the level of performance you need. Keep in mind that your engine should be compatible with your grass type, and it must be able to handle the terrain. If you are mowing on steep slopes or bumpy terrain, you are going to need more engine power than you would on level ground.
